Facade Construction Begins/Salvaged Equipment


We started construction on the Awaken Cafe's new facade! We're pleased to welcome Anthony Bush of Bush Construction Company to the Awaken Cafe family and are excited to be entering the next stage of this project!

Our neighbors the Jhava House have closed their doors and we're giving some of their equipment a second life at the Awaken Cafe. We got a group of friends together (including Doug Hawkins, Nik Greene, Katy Perrings, and Alex Zendzian) this weekend to move the equipment (which includes some sinks, a refrigerator, shelving, and other small products) down the street into our space!

We're out to spread the word about the Awaken Cafe and get the Bay Area excited for our opening! I was reading a new magazine and saw an advertisement for a Yelp-like service for sustainable businesses called Sustainelane.com! I created a listing and we'd love for you to review us and let 'em know you're looking forward to the Awaken Cafe!

We've given the "Friends of the Awaken Cafe" Gift Card Program a whole new identity. This innovative and rewarding program has now got a name that captures its real essence: CAFE CREATOR CARDS! With your purchase, CAFE CREATORS are literally creating the Awaken Cafe out of thin air! We've also dropped the "Gift" part, because while it is a gift to you, to us, and to the community, it really is quite distinct from a traditional gift card.

Announcing: The Youngest Awaken Cafe Community Member!


Our Green Architect, Sandy Chan, and husband Ravi recently gave birth to Kaimana Rei Apana-Chan on June 25, 2007. She was four weeks early and is "tiny but otherwise very healthy."

We are overjoyed by the blessing that this baby is and wish her a future full of love, family, community, and many, many hugs!

Ann Dunlap, Co-Founder Cortt Dunlap's mother, attended our recent Investor Dinner, met our leadership team, toured the space, and was inspired by the mission, financial outlook, and vision of the Awaken Cafe. She's made a financial commitment to the success of the Awaken Cafe and joined the management team which is driving the Cafe forward! She brings a passion for design, visual arts, and extensive experience behind the scenes doing what it takes to bring a start-up venture into the world!
