Conspiracy of Venus

Conspiracy of Venus is a 30-woman vocal ensemble based in San Francisco that explores the creative frontiers of music under the artistic direction of Joyce Todd McBride. The choir sings jazz inspired a cappella arrangements of the songs and poems of David Bowie, Tom Waits, Bjork, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Bertolt Brecht, and more, as well as original compositions by McBride.

Alaskan songwriter Michael Howard’s award winning songwriting and a voice akin to Cat Stevens will pair with Caroline Cotter and her “evocative, eclectic, New England Americana” and captivating soprano vocals for this special event at Awaken Cafe.

The LISTEN Concert Series at Awaken Cafe features an evening of the best live music in the Bay Area played in an intimate, small listening room setting. Think small tables, tablecloths, candles and a room of no more than 80 fans listening to great local music. Featuring local beer, great wine, and a special dinner menu.

Awaken Cafe presents…

In case you hadn’t heard—weird weather is here to stay. California, after years of drought, is now lighting up with flash flood warnings. This is just one aspect of climate change that’s been spurred on by human activity.

How do we know that the climate is changing dramatically, and that this isn’t just part of the planet’s natural cycles? Join us for a conversation with a local scientist who studies this exact question.

Professor Lynn Ingram studies the history of climate and environmental change in California using sediment cores from lakes and estuaries, including San Francisco Bay. Dr. Ingram is a Fellow of the California Academy of Science, and is a Senior Fulbright recipient and Miller Fellow at UC Berkeley.

Filmed before a live audience at Awaken Café (1429 Broadway Ave., Oakland, CA), each episode of Ars Technica Live is a speculative, informal conversation between Ars Technica hosts and an invited guest. The audience, drawn from Ars Technica’s readers, is also invited to join the conversation and ask questions. These aren’t soundbyte setups; they are deepcuts from the frontiers of research and creativity.

Doors are at 7pm, and the live taping is from 7:30 to 8:00pm (be sure to get there early if you want a seat). Then you can stick around for informal discussion at the bar, along with delicious drinks and snacks. Can’t make it out to Oakland? Never fear! Episodes will be posted to Ars Technica the week after the live events.

Ingram has been a Professor in the Departments of Earth and Planetary Science and Geography at UC Berkeley since 1995. She is the author of more than sixty published scientific articles on past climate change in California and the other locations around the Pacific Ocean, and she is the author of a book about the climate history and water resources in California (UC Press, 2013): The West without Water: What Past Floods, Droughts, and Other Climatic Clues Tell Us About Tomorrow.

Annalee Newitz is the tech culture editor at Ars Technica. Previously she was the editor-in-chief of Gizmodo and io9. She is the author of Scatter, Adapt, and Remember: How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction (Doubleday). Her first novel, Autonomous, comes out in 2017 from Tor Books.

Our feature this month is 2016 Oakland Slam Grand Champion and 2017 WoWPS representative, Cecilia Jordan!

Cecelia Jordan is an educator of United States and World History at Ralph J. Bunche High School in West Oakland. She moved to The Bay Area in 2015 from Austin, Texas, where she taught elementary and middle school students how to think critically by engaging her school community in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Restorative Justice practices. Her pedagogical pursuits in Oakland are an extension of the work she began in Texas, and she hopes to use various forms of visual and performance art to heal the communities of color she is currently working with; she endeavors to used her pedagogy to address the atrocities of institutional violence and socioeconomic traumas that feel ever-present and distending in Oakland in particular and contemporary American society generally. True activism, she maintains, lies in the hopes of revolutionary forms of reasoning by the youth—a set of thinking tools to reimagine a more just and peaceful society. She is humbled to be part of the societal stirrings before the next social movement begins.

Performer Bios:

❤ Rachel Lark is a singer/songwriter who sings about Sex, Drugs, heartbreak, and Messy Apartments. An up-and-coming San Francisco artist with a die-hard cult following, Rachel Lark has quickly become the musical muse of the sex-positive revolution. Her music has been featured on The Savage Lovecast, and she performs frequently San Francisco counterculture haunts like Bawdy Storytelling and Tourette’s Without Regrets. Her music is always lyrically based with a strong foundation of passionate songwriting, while the timbres vary depending on the performance. Sometimes she’s bantering with the crowd over some ukulele plucking, and at other times she’ll be behind her laptop and synthesizers creating dance beats to accompany her layered vocal harmonies. In 2014 she released her debut EP, “I Wouldn’t Worry” followed by her first full-length album, “Lark After Dark,” and her Christmas album “Hung For The Holidays.” In 2015 she successfully funded a music video and new album through a Kickstarter campaign and has just released both her new album, “Vagenius” and her new music video for the song Warm, Bloody, and Tender. Find her music (and videos) at RachelLark.com

❤ Jefferson Bergey writes and performs his family-unfriendly music all over the Bay Area and most notably as one of the resident songwriters at San Francisco’s Bawdy Storytelling. As a solo acoustic act, Bergey’s sound is akin to coffee-shop singer-songwriter folk…if the coffee shop also sold sex toys and sativa gummy bears. His polite vulgarity is definitely not for the very young and impressionable or the very old and conservative. His recent release ‘Come For Me’ (Spotify/Itunes) was inspired by and largely comprised of sex-centric compositions custom written for Dixie De La Tour and Bawdy Storytelling. His music has been heard on the Bawdy Storytelling podcast, Kevin Allison’s popular RISK! podcast, and recently made his Sketchfest debut. You can find his music at JeffersonBergey.com

❤ Singer-songwriter and accordionist, Amber Lee Baker brings together smart lyrics and catchy melodies to create her unique brand of Sassy Folk-Cabaret. She has toured the US and Europe and is currently working on a new full length album of fresh sexy songs. Amber has bee a contributor to the Accordion Babe Pin-Up Calendar and revolution since 2009. When she’s not performing, touring or writing songs, Amber teaches accordion lessons at Smythe’s Accordion Center in Oakland, CA and practices architecture. You may find out more at www.amberleebaker.com.

❤ While Sexual Folklorist & Bawdy Storytelling founder Dixie De La Tour has been telling true, dirty stories for ages, it was 10 Years ago that she founded Bawdy Storytelling, the Nation’s original sex and storytelling series. She was looking to encourage real connections in the San Francisco sexual underground, and, as the song goes, “Up from the ground came a bubbling crude…” Internationally known as the ‘Grande Dame of Dirty Storytelling,” Dixie has taken Bawdy from an industrial loft in the Bay Area to a multi-city live storytelling event that welcomes true stories from any and all communities (LGBTQIA, kink, polyamory, swingers, vanilla, and many more). Dixie and Bawdy Storytelling have been praised by press both big and small; She has been lauded by Master Storyteller Mike Daisey as a “masterful emcee, and her show is everything that works for storytelling—she creates a warm, safe space in which stories can bloom with dark hilarity, salacious textures, and moments of deep connection.” Dixie has hosted and curated Bawdy Storytelling events at Yale Sex Week, the Bondage Awards, CatalystCon Sexuality Conference, Dark Odyssey, FetFest, and more, as well as her home turf of the Bawdy Mainstage and BawdySlam shows. She works with each storyteller, crafting and curating, to make sure that the evening is a cohesive whole. She also leads storytelling workshops where would be storytellers can hone their craft (while arousing their audience). In her spare time, Dixie can be found causing trouble in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Portland, and any other major city where literate perverts gather to tell dirty stories. You can always find her at BawdyStorytelling.com, too.

Winner of SFist’s Best Storytelling Show 2016, the SF Weekly’s Best of San Francisco & the LA Weekly’s Best Of Los Angeles (for Best Storytelling) & 2 Time Winner of the SF Bay Guardian’s Best of the Bay Award (Best Literary Event)
